Posters, Charts, and Miscellaneous

NEW!  Shauna Juarez, Literacy Coach at Alvin Elementary School, Santa Maria-Bonita School District, created posters that explain the purposes for reading and rereading both the student anthology and the decodable text.

Reading the Decodable Text

Here is an alternate version of a Univeral Access Time Planning sheet.  Remember, by Phase IV of Universal Access implementation, the teacher will be meeting with at least two small groups for preteaching, reteaching, or enrichment activities.

The Houghton Mifflin Reading Program features a list of Proofreading Marks in each student's Practice Book. These begin in First grade, with new marks added each year. Some of these marks are different than marks that are found on commercially available proofreading posters. Rather than create seven separate editing posters, we have combined several grade levels on one poster. Classroom teachers can teach and model the marks appropriate for their grade level, and they may wish to teach the other marks when they feel their students are ready for them.

Key Proofreading Marks for Kindergarten - 2nd grade

Key Proofreading Marks for 3rd - 6th grade

This Universal Access Poster reminds students of their responsibilities during their independent work time.

The Houghton Mifflin Reading Program provides students with a variety of reading genres in the Anthologies and Big Books. The links below offer posters with definitions and supporting graphics for the genres introduced in these books. The definitions are taken from the "Different Text for Different Purposes" page in your Teacher's Edition (the page immediately preceeding each week's Lesson Planner).  NOTE:  Some of these files are quite large so downloading make take a while.

This poster lists the phases of Direct Instruction.  Research has shown that the highest positive effects on learning are those for which the teacher assumes direction, letting students know what is to be learned (Orientation), explaining how to learn it (Presentation), practicing the new learning with immediate corrective feedback (Highly Structured Practice), monitored additional practice to cement the new learning into long-term memory (Guided Practice), and eventually independent practice.

Phases of Direct Instruction

The Houghton Mifflin reading program is set up on a repeating daily format. For a quick look at a five-day plan, click on the grade-level links below.
