HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS
NEW! Danielle Helmer, second grade teacher at Juan Pacifico Ontiveros School (SMBSD), has created weekly high frequency word tests. During each week of instruction, Danielle finds time for her students to repeatedly practice the high frequency words. Then, on Friday, each student is tested on the words. Danielle says that the entire class can be tested in 10 minutes or less. The words that students have mastered are starred on the test page and words that need additional practice are circled. The test is then sent home to parents. Directions on the test page are written in both English and Spanish.

Phrases and Short Sentences for Repeated Reading Practice
Are your students able to read the high-frequency words in isolation, but stumble on them when they occur in a text passage? The lists below contain words from Fry's Instant Word imbedded in phrases and short sentences. The first list of 100 words represents 50% of all the words children encounter in elementary school reading. Repeated reading of these phrases, a few per week, gives students practice reading high-frequency words, thus building their fluency and general proficiency.
